1. Matilda kept thinking about the marvelous party. Then she realized, sadly, that the wonderful evening was over, all over.

2. Matilda walked to a chair, slumped down wearily in it, and waited in her evening gown. She did not have the strength to get up and go to bed. She was too exhausted to move or to think.

3. He slumped back, gulping for air.

4. By the end of the the week, they had lost all hope. Mr. Loisel shook his head and said, “We must find a way to replace the necklace.”

5. The next day they went from shop to shopsearching for a necklace that looked like the one they had lost.

20. He pulled a small notebook out of his pocket. Then slowly and carefully, he proceeded to read aloud an accurate description of the missing letter. When he finished reading, he left.

21. When I arrived, Dupin greeted me at the door. We chatted pleasantly for a while. Finally I asked, “...”

26. Then I realized that the Minister might have left the letter out in the open, right under everyone’s nose. With this idea in mind, I put on a pair of dark glasses, and went, early one morning, to his house.

27. I saw nothing suspicious until my eyes suddenly stopped on a box.

36. The young woman dumped some of their belongings onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a thud. “Hi, I’m Jinny Jordan,” she said.

42. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends. Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table.

43. Laurie stood motionless for what must have been only seconds, yet it seemed like years while she thought about what to do.

44. “All I have to do is forget that I found this,” she said to herself. “If Jinny doesn’t have her music, she might as well not skate. Jinny would look pretty ridiculous skating without music. And then I would win.”

45. Laurie shivered slightly as she thought about this. Then she wondered, “Do I really want to win that much? Does winning mean so much to me that I’d be willing to cheat for it?”

46. Laurie hesitated for a second. Then she pulled herself together and said, “Tell Jinny that I found her tape.”

47. For a moment she was too stunned to hear what he was saying, but she pulled herself together to hear the rest of the story.

48. The audience applauded from time to timeenthusiastically supporting her in her comeback.

观众不时鼓掌热情支持她复出。


49. As she completed it, she heard the audience gasp. When her turn was overapplause filled the stadium.

50. As she skated off the ice, she waved to the crowd and quickly made her way to the exit where her coach ran up to her and hugged her.

51. When she heard the bell ringing, the old lady rose from her chair and made her way to the door.

52. “You did it, Laurie!” she said. “You skate perfectly and beautifully. I think that youve won.

53. Laurie said nothing, but she smiled as she took a seat and waited to see what marks the judges would give her. When the marks appeared, Laurie knew that she had beaten Jinny Jordan and everyone else.

劳丽什么也没说,但她微笑着坐下来,等着看评委会给她多少分。分数出来时,劳丽知道她打败了金妮·乔丹和其他所有人。


54. “Laurie, you won! You won!” Kathy screamedas she rushed up to her. “I guess I did,” was all Laurie could say.

“劳丽,你赢了!你赢了!”凯西冲到她跟前尖叫着。劳里所能说的只有“我想是的”。


55. As she walked back to the dressing room, Laurie thought about Jinny’s music tape. She remembered wondering whether or not to return it. “But no one will ever know how close I really came to losing,” Laurie said softly to herself.

回到更衣室时,劳丽想起了金妮的音乐磁带。她记得当时还在想要不要还。“但没人会知道我差一点就输了,”劳丽轻声对自己说。
